IMURA Project No: 1192
Research Topic: Data Science and AI Techniques for Signal/Image Reconstruction from Samples at Unknown Locations
Supervisors: Prof. Ajit Rajwade (IIT Bombay) and Prof. Emanuele Viterbo (Monash University)
Zahir Khan is a Ph.D. Scholar at the IITB-Monash Research Academy, working in the C-MInDS (Centre of Machine Intelligence and Data Science) Lab. His research focuses on data-driven methods for signal and image reconstruction, with applications to 3D reconstruction of biomolecular structures from Cryo-EM projection images. The problem involves recovering a 3D structure from noisy 2D projections whose locations and orientations are unknown, making it a challenging reconstruction problem. His work aims to develop robust computational methods for extracting and reconstructing meaningful structural information from noisy and incomplete data, with potential applications in structural biology and structure-based drug discovery.
He holds an M.Tech. in Computing and Mathematics from IIT Palakkad and an M.Sc. in Mathematics from Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan. His M.Tech. thesis focused on PPG signal quality assessment. Previously, he worked as a Project Researcher at ISI Kolkata on a DBT-funded project involving AI-assisted diabetic retinopathy screening and prediction. His interdisciplinary background in mathematics, signal processing, engineering, and artificial intelligence has shaped his research interests in scientific imaging, inverse problems, machine learning, and AI-driven methods for biomedical applications.
Beyond research, Zahir enjoys exploring new places, learning new things, connecting with nature, watching movies, and spending time with friends and family.
